Gigaba: We need to expand our economy

Gigaba: We need to expand our economy

Newly appointed Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba said the primary objective of his visit abroad, would be to deliver the message that South Africa's economy is recovering.

On the week that Gigaba's predecessor, Pravin Gordhan, was removed from his post, he had been on an international investor road show. Those plans were cut short by President Jacob Zuma's Cabinet Reshuffle at the end of March.

Gigaba is now in a position where he has to take on that baton, and try to renew confidence in the South Africa economy.  South Africa has endured two ratings downgrades since Gigaba took over at the helm of Treasury. One from Fitch and one from S&P.

The key areas during Gigaba's road show - manufacturing, mining and agriculture.

"We are going to portray the positives of a growing economy that is showing signs of recovery and talk to them about our plans to create new wealth," said Gigaba ahead of the trip.

"We want to expand the economy and ensure that there are more participants in the economy both those who gain employment and those who become entrepreneurs through SMME's and agriculture," added Gigaba.
