Ex-FBI chief to oversee Trump-Russia ties investigation

Ex-FBI chief to oversee Trump-Russia ties investigation

Former FBI director, Robert Mueller, has been appointed to head the investigation into any possible ties the Trump campaign may have had during the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller, who served as FBI director under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, was recently fired FBI director, James Comey's immediate predecessor.

Mueller was appointed by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to head the investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself as he had lied about meeting with Russian officials.

"Based on the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command," Rosenstein said.

President Donald Trump's response to Mueller's appointment, issued via a statement, said that the investigation would reveal that there was no collusion between his camp and the Russian government during the election.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know ?"- there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity.

"I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country," the statement read.

The former FBI director's appointment has been hailed by pundits on cable television as the best possible choice to head the investigation. Mueller served in the position from 2001 to 2013. He stayed on beyond the usual 10 year term at the request of then-president Obama.
